Building on efforts aimed at successful implementation of Goal 16&17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which commits countries; ‘to promote peaceful, inclusive societies for sustainable development, to provide access to justice for all and to build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels’ , the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Office of the Senior

Special Adviser to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDG) have entered into a partnership which was signalled by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, NBA President, A. B. Mahmoud OON, SAN, reaffirmed NBA’s commitment to achieving the target goals set out in the MoU, which are: to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all; substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms; develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels; as well as Goal 17; Revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development.

“As we embark on this great journey, we shall not only deploy our expertise and resources, but we shall also work with other stakeholders, and commit ourselves to working tirelessly for the achievement of our set objectives in various projects as encapsulated in our proposal.” A. B. Mahmoud stated, adding that NBA will continue with its support to ensure that no one is left behind.

Head of OSSAP-SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, commended NBA for the continued support to the government in making SDGs programmes a reality. She added that the partnership entered with NBA "will go a long way in putting the country on a path to effective implementation of SDGs-related programme across the country."

As the foremost professional membership organisation for legal practitioners in Nigeria, with 125 active branches across the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, NBA is uniquely placed to help implement the target goals throughout the country. The NBA is committed to be the vanguard for promotion and defence of the rule of law, good governance, social justice, and the dignity of all persons.
